Avril Lavigne Under My Skin Album: New Songs, Dont Tell Me, My Happy Ending, Lyrics And Music Videos

Avril Lavigne released her first album at age 17, and was greeted by hostile critics. Regardless of the critical thumping her debut received, the public bought the album, and Avril Lavigne became something of a pop icon. Fans did not mind others penned most of the songs, or that the lyrics smacked of self-righteous, teen angst.
The album, "Let Go," went multi-platinum, and for the next two years, fans and critics anxiously anticipated what the Canadian teen would do next. They got their answer in 2004, with the sophomore effort from Avril Lavigne: "Under My Skin." Fans were ecstatic with the album, and with hits such as "Don't Tell Me" and "My Happy Ending," critics warmed to the, then, 19-year-old rock star.
Perhaps the dichotomy between critics and Avril Lavigne's fan base stem more from her persona than from her sound. One of the tracks from her debut album, "Complicated," was one that critics found particularly shallow, but the fans ate it up. Shallow is probably the correct adjective for the hit song's lyrics; however, Avril Lavigne fans dug her powerful voice and the catchy chorus. Fans in 2002 also appreciated a young female singer that kept her clothes on, at a time when Britney and Christina were making it big. Avril Lavigne seemed to offer more of a self-respect vibe in her music's themes, while the scantily clad pop stars were singing about the numerous attributes of being sexpots.
The themes of Avril Lavigne did not change much in the years between 2002 and 2004. The track, "Don't Tell Me," could be the theme song for all young girls, determined to keep their pants on. "My Happy Ending" is similar in melody and theme to her earlier work, delving into the not-so-deep disappointments of teenage relationships. The music videos for both of the aforementioned tracks are practically interchangeable, with Lavigne proclaiming her independence from a man that slighted her. Again, her repetitive themes did not offend her fans. One could not turn on a radio in 2005 without hearing "My Happy Ending."
Musically, however, the songs on "Under My Skin" maintain a greater, and more consistent, density than the earlier work of Avril Lavigne. The use of piano and synthesizer adds depth to some of the album's tracks. Lavigne and her producers were inclined to layer additional vocal tracks on songs, also adding depth. After all, it is not her music videos or words that set her apart from the pop star flock, but it is her voice that truly makes Avril Lavigne special. Also, she was more involved in the songwriting on "Under My Skin," but she was not without help. The album's tracks are co-written by Avril Lavigne and Chantal Kreviazuk, with the occasional addition of her band mates. Though the album's verses are still a bit immature, Avril Lavigne was still a teenager when it was released in 2004; so emotional depth probably should not be expected of her song writing.
Todd Burns of stylusmagazine.com put it best when he wrote, "Rimbaud she ain't, but then again she never claimed to be a symbolist, and that's at least part of the reason for her massive popularity." Indeed, with such popularity, Avril Lavigne will write many more songs in the years to come. Going forward, it will be interesting to see if her lyrics mature as she does.
